Review---This Girl Is Different by J.J Johnson

Third post for a day.Phew!!! I feel better now after not posting anything the entire week.I had to bottle up my  feelings the entire week and now they are all out. Its a great feeling. The review is for This Girl Is Different by J.J Johnson. I loved it and I hope you will too.

This Girl Is Different by J.J Johnson is a book about a girl, Evie, who has been home-schooled, her entire life and decides to join a school for the experience. As the title goes, Evie is a girl, who is so different from any other girl in high school. By so different, I mean, she has her own special way of looking at things. This book is all about her experience in high school as a girl who has no clue, as to what a school is like. The ups and downs that she faces, first love, first true friendship.

When I first saw this book in Netgalley, I was a little skeptical about it. At first sight, I wasn’t a great fan of the cover page. But as my book-buying policy goes (book-reading in this case) I read the synopsis and was totally floored. The concept was the best and it was easily something I had never read about. Thankfully the publisher accepted by request and I was able to read the book. I loved the book from the very first page. I have always read books and watched movies about high school and they have all been the same thing, sometimes with a little twist or change in story, but never have I ever read anything like this. This book is one of those which make you start thinking things over again. For a person who likes to stay out of school politics, I was pretty darn eager to jump into the book and lend Evie a helping hand to assist her in fighting against injustice. I connected with Evie from the very beginning and in my minds eye, I saw myself befriend her if I would’ve been a part of the book. I got upset when she got upset. I was giddy with relief when she was happy and joyful. This story has made a BIG impact on my mind and often I find myself seeing things through Evie’s eye.
The characters are all great. Evie is adamant and won’t stop fighting for justice, which is a good thing. She has a strong believe in herself and craves for friendship. Rajas is just stupid and selfish. At first, I thought, he was the sweet one but guess I was wrong in my assumptions just like Evie. Jacinda is fickle minded, a sweet cheerleader, arrogant, refuses to listen to anyone, thinks that she is always right.
No matter the characters, I really really liked this book and I think all of you should read it. It makes you want to more and more with every page. It’s a guaranteed entertaining book from the first page till the end.

What did you think of the review/book?? Anything I missed??

TGIF---2---

TGIF is a weekly meme which, like FF, has a weekly question that you answer as well as a recap of this week's posts. Its a fun way to get to know more about blogger friends. It is hosted by Ginger@GReads.I am participating in this weekly meme. You can also participate if you want here.

This weeks question-
Q)Stand Alone vs Series:What's your stance?
Oh I love this question. I am going to be diplomatic and say both. I love both for very different reasons.
Series because the story of my favorite characters continue and I get a peek at their life and experiences, no matter good or bad. With every addition, in a series, I get to know more and more about the characters and sometimes I connect with them all, deeply. As of now I haven't read a series which is a flop or anything. I've loved them all. Plus I get addicted and I can't wait for the next book to come out. Some of my favorite series of all time are-The Twilight series, The Vampire Academy series, The Vampire Diaries series, all the series books by Meg Cabot (YUP!! I've read each one of them), Pretty Little Liars series and many more.

Stand Alone because even though the story ends then and there, they leave a great impression on my mind and I know I will never forget them.It is sad to bid goodbye to some of the characters but that's the whole purpose of the book. They are there simply for you to read and get something out of them. Some experience, some knowledge, some truth about life, some disappointment. There are some great stand alones which would have been a bore if they were made into series. Some books are just perfect being one and only. I don't crave series so much that I want all the books to be made into series. No, I definitely would not like that. Some great Stand Alones are The Host by Stephenie Meyer (yeah this book, very efficiently, manages to creep into all of my posts/lists. Its the best!!), The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen, all the Mary Higgins Clark's books, the Elizabeth Scott books, Hailey Abbott's books et cetera.

What about you??

Goodreads---11th Weekly Writing Contest.

The Young Adult Book Club on Goodreads hosts a weekly writing contest. I just joined this group and I already love it. This week I got an invitation to participate and so I decided, why not. After all I do love reading. I also wanted to test my on the spot writing skills. So I saw the invite today morning and started writing immediately. After 2 hours I had my short story ready. The short story is based on a topic, I strongly feel about. Hope you all like it.

The Challenge-to go back in time! write a song/poem/short story on something that has to do with a previous age. From the 60's to the 1700's to the beginning of modern civilization , your choice. Fiction or non-fiction, doesn't matter.
My Short Story---
Title: The Rescue.
Genre: Short Story.
Description: About forced labour in the 1960’s

Sitting by the fireplace, I let the warmth surround me. I let my mind wander, away from the pain and grief that threatened to consume my mind. Often had I thought, what life would be like in the future, but never had I expected to be a victim of forced labour. Gone are those days, when my only concern was to be the best at school, at home. Now all I pray for is to be freed from bearing this crime. I hear soft footsteps coming my way and thinking it must be the landlord, I resume my work of dusting this place.
“Annabell”, I hear someone whisper my name. Last time I was caught talking and not working, I was lashed  with the whip. Tears had rolled down my red face as I begged them to stop. Ignoring my plea, they had hit harder and harder, removing their frustration and anger on me, as if I was a sack of grain with no feelings whatsoever. The wound all over my body, instead of healing, seemed to grow more and more everyday, almost like a curse. I wondered, what wrong must I have committed to deserve this kind of punishment and torture?.
“Annabell!!” I heard the voice again, a little more eager and impatient this time. Afraid to be caught again, I turned my head slightly, to peek over my shoulder and found Edmund and all my friends from the village,  peeping into the room. He motioned to me, beckoning me to come nearer. Reluctantly, I walked to them and asked, “What are you all doing here? You must leave now!The landlords are all sleeping!.” He replied on all of their behalf - “We are here to get you out of this place, Anna.” I was going to refuse when a thought occurred my mind. If I got out now, I could probably, live the rest of my life, safe and secure far away. Also, I might be able to rescue my mother and father and we’d be able to live happily. But if I refused, I would be stuck here for the rest of my life until some landlord got fed up and killed me. Then I wouldn’t be able to protect my parents, like I promised them I would. This was my only hope at getting somewhere and I refused to let it go. The offer was very tempting and for the sake of my parents, I agreed. I ran to the backyard where I saved my stash of money which I stole from them. I might as well make use of it now that I was leaving and at not cost would I come back even if it meant I would be killed on the spot, that is if I was ever caught.
Separated at the age of 17, I was taken to the city where only the rich lived. At first , I did not understand what was happening. Then later I came to know that I had been sold of to some landlord in the city just like my parents had been sold off.
Thinking about it, anger bubbled through me and impulsively, I grabbed a piece of firewood and set the curtain on fire. Then the furniture and  the paintings. One by one the whole room was on fire. I ran outside where my friends were waiting for me. Together, we all fled from the city. The entire mansion was now  a giant ball of fire against the pleasant moonlight in the sky. I turned back, looking at the mansion completely consumed in fire and cursed all the residents. The feeling of freedom was liberating and I finally knew that now, I would be able to live in peace.

Review---Adored by Cecily Von Ziegesar

Firstly, friends, please forgive me for this attempt at writing a review, which I believe is not my best one. I sincerely have no idea what to write about it without giving away the whole story so I’m just going to go ahead with my feelings throughout the book.
Synopsis from Goodreads-
Brett Messerchmidt is planning Waverly Academy's annual holiday ball and gift exchange. But when some enterprising students decide that playing Secret Satan is infinitely more fun, the entire school starts acting naughty. Now all Brett wants for Christmas is a quiet holiday-and a kiss from a certain someone under the mistletoe. Too bad Callie Vernon has the same idea. Ho ho no!
Everybody at Waverly is getting into the giving spirit. The only present Tinsley Carmichael wants to unwrap this holiday is her new boyfriend, Julian McCafferty. But what happens when she uncovers a shady secret from his past instead?
Santa knows when you've been bad or good . . . but what's the point of being good when being bad is so much fun?

My review-
For starters, it was an okay read. Surely entertaining, but not something I would die to read. This book gives us an inside view of what elite schools are like. I got this book from my school library and was really excited to read it as it was by the same author who has written the best selling Gossip Girl series which is also a Tv show. But I didn’t realize that this is the 8th book in the series. I saw the book and was so excited that I totally forgot to check out anything about the book before I issued it. Not having read the previous books in the series, I couldn’t feel a flow in the storyline ,that is, there was no sense of continuity. It lacked sense of humor and I found the whole Secret Satan thing really silly. But once again Cecily Von Ziegesar has successfully managed to bring out the story in its true teenage sense.
The characters were as real as students in your high school. Many of them were love sick throughout the story up until the last 3-4 chapters. In general they are all impractical and let their judgments be swayed by jealousy, sympathy. Little J, back to her own tactics, becomes too full of herself, when 3 freshman students want to make a documentary film on her because they believe she’s the IT GIRL. Walking with her nose high up in the air, she doesn’t notice the potholes in her path, into which she’s likely to fall. Overall it was okay. If you’ve read and liked the other book in the series then  you should go ahead and read this. Also if you miss Little J from Gossip Girl (TV Show) then you can read this book and spend some quality time with the character.

What do you think of the book/review??

Blog Hop---4---

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme which like Follow Friday, is a great way to get to know more about new bloggers in the blogging world.

This week's question is-
Q)If you find a book you love, do you hunt down other books by the same author?
Of-course I do.If I have read a book and loved it I search for books by the same author and make sure to read them all and I often find myself wanting more even when I know that there are no new books by the author.I connect with the author's style of writing and can't even imagine what plight I would be in if they stopped writing. Most of the authors have never disappointed me.There are some authors whose, almost all the books I have read like Meg Cabot, L.J.Smith.

What about you??Leave a link if you are a new blogger and I will surely  stop by  your blog.

Its just fun (*evil smile*) to watch them squirm, like a worm trying to get out of trouble.I know I am evil, but I can't help myself. And its not like they are all saints anyway.I try and control myself, but to hell with that. Its not really fun being the goody-two-shoes.
What about you?I see that not many bloggers are participating in this, they definitely should try it out.Its loads of fun.Once again this is a meme which tells us more about the bloggers.

Review---Ultraviolet by R J Anderson

To my wonderful blogger friends/readers,
I am really sorry for not having posted anything for two whole days.Quite unusual of me,when I generally have two posts a day.But I was busy with school and family and was away.So I couldn't access my laptop and hence couldn't post.
Here's the review to a wonderful book.

Ultraviolet by R J Anderson is a science fiction novel which explores the feelings and the mind of Alison, who is registered in a psychiatric institution. No longer clear about her memories,Alison doesn't know if she truly has killed Tori-a beautiful and popular girl at school-or if her mind is playing tricks on her.Neglected by her mother,Alison seeks help from her therapist,Sebastian Faraday, for whom she soon starts to develop feelings of love and friendship. What Alison doesn't know is that people aren't always what they seem to be.

After having loved The Host by Stephenie Meyer,I decided to give science fiction another shot, thinking that you never know I might fall in love with this genre. And I must say, I was quite right.I really liked this book.It was quite a wonderful experience. In the beginning, the story was vague.I spent a little too much time trying to figure out what was wrong with Alison's brain. Finally loosing patience,I committed a book crime,I googled the symptoms faced by Alison and found out about the disorder.I know I ought to have left the suspense intact but I was so into the story that I HAD to know beforehand. But alas!It is a very well written book.It totally gave the vibes of a teenage girl talking about her feelings. At times I could relate to some parts of the story.I assume that it must have been written with teenagers in mind, not that adults can't read it.They can and they certainly should when they find the time to read.Like I said before it  is a really good book.
Most of the characters were nice, except for a few annoying ones.Alison is a nice girl, yearning for her mothers love and acceptance since childhood.I felt so bad for her.She was treated like an outsider by her own mother.I don't blame her for not having a very strong self-esteem. She has only 1 bestfriend (who is really pathetic).Faraday, her therapist, reached out to her and helped her become more confident of herself. He guided her throughout her stay at Pine Hills and he believed in her more than she did in herself. He's a very friendly character.Kirk is one of the annoying characters. He's never serious about anything. He's the ideal mental patient character.
Overall it was a good read.If you haven't read it,by way of ARC,then you certainly should when the book comes out in June.Give it a try and see if you'll like it.

Tell me about your opinion.

Follow Friday---5---

Follow Friday is a weekly meme by which we get to know more about new bloggers in the blogging world. Its hosted by Parajunkee.

This week's question is-
Q)Do you have anyone you can discuss books with IRL?Tell us about him/her.
I do have quite a few people with whom I can discuss about books, not many though.Among my friends I'm one of the very very few people who is obsessed with reading.
Firstly, I talk about books with my dad.He simply adores reading. You see, that's where I get the passion from. The slight problem is that he reads mainly classics and some other thriller novel. So yeah, those are the only two genres I can talk to him about.I don't blame him,it would be really weird to,one day, find him reading chick-lit.You get what I mean?
Secondly, mom. Finally somebody with whom I can discuss about anything and everything book related.Am I thankful to have a mom,who tries out all sorts of books or what!!She does read a lot of romance and suspense stuff. She's really fast in reading (something I'm not *green with envy*)
Thirdly,my friends Nikki,Shazzey,Sammy and Ashee. They are fine readers but not really the I-Can't-Live-Without-Reading type of people. And they also read all sorts of books.I get a lot of recommendations from them.Shazzey is the one who literally ran behind me to finish reading the Shopaholic Series (I'm still not done.Becky is so darn annoying with the whole repeating the same mistakes again and again thing.). The first three books in the series were an amazing read,so thanks Shazzey for the suggestion.
Boy that was a HUGE answer!!

What about you??I am really sorry to all my readers for this late FF post but I was away so couldn't post.

This teaser is from Ultraviolet by R J Anderson.

So what did that tell me about the mark I'd seen on Tori's arm?Had it just been my imagination conjuring up another excuse to dislike her, like the mark Sanjay had thought he'd seen on Dr.Ward?Or had there really been something sinister lurking there,in the darkness beneath her skin?
Hope you enjoy the teaser.Good day.If I'm not following you please do leave your link below in the comments and I'll hop by your post.Thank You.

Review---Moonlight by Rachel Hawthorne

Before I begin with the review I would like to mention something to the readers. The first paragraph is the synopsis of the book which I've written in my own words, so if you already know what the book is about and just want to read the review then skip right over to paragraph 2. The review is for the first book in the Dark Guardian Series by Rachel Hawthorne.

Moonlight by Rachel Hawthorne is mainly based on werewolves or Shape Shifters, as the say in the book. Kayla, a wildlife enthusiast, lost her parents when she was five. She was told that they were accidentally shot by hunters in the forest. But unable to recall what exactly happened that day, Kayla finds herself connected to the forest- where her parents died- in a way she has never felt before. The book elaborates on the events that take place in Kayla's life until the big day when everything is about to change. When everything she knows about herself will change- for the better or worse? READ to find out.

If I had to say something about this book in a sentence then it would be that I LOVED IT WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL. I dove right into the story from the very first page and was unable to put the book down. The times when I was forced to put the book down, I would do so very heart-breakingly. My first instinct when I read the synopsis of the book was that probably this book too might be following the twilight storyline minus the vampires. Not able to ignore my love for paranormal books and of-course werewolves (TEAM JACOB!!! WOOHOO!!!), I reached forward and grabbed this book. And boy am I glad to have done that or what!! This book is nothing close to/similar to the twilight series. It is amazing in its own captivating world. I want to thank Rachel Hawthorne for having written this series and I wish her good luck for her upcoming books.Moonlight is written very well. Really descriptive (something I love), its impressing. The places were described so real that I could imagine myself in place of Kayla and I loved every moment of being in that place. If I ever get to meet Rachel Hawthorne, one question I would most definitely ask is "How she comes up with such beautiful places? Are they for real or just imaginary??"
Moving on to the characters. Kayla is a really pretty teenager with a good sense of responsibility. She loves the wildlife and finds it more comfortable, in the forest, than in any place. She ranks second in my YA FEMALE WARRIOR CHARACTERS list (first place occupied by Rose from The Vampire Academy). Not to mention that she's really friendly and good at heart. She is a very determined character and doesn't lose hope soon. Next in line is Lucas. What can I say about Lucas? Anything would be too less. He has an endless list of qualities. He's hot, handsome, responsible, a nature lover (really environment friendly, which sometimes is sort of annoying) loyal, considerate and on and on......
So far this is the best book about Shape Shifters. Can't wait to read the second book in the series. If you haven't read it, please go ahead and give it a try. I guarantee that you won't regret reading it.

What do you think?Don't forget to let me know.

Review---Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen

OMG!! I have 36 followers. That's great. Thank You everyone for all the support and comments. First and foremost before I begin with the review, there is one quote I would like to highlight from the book that really touched my heart. ”It’s a lot easier to be lost than found. It’s the reason we’re always searching and rarely discovered-so many locks, not enough keys.”

Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen revolves mainly around the life of Ruby Cooper. After the sudden disapperance of her mom, she is forced to live at her sister’s place despite the fact that she believes she doesn’t need anyone’s help and can survive on her own. Her sister’s life being very different from what she’s used to, Ruby tries very hard not to get involved in anything. She considers living at her sister’s place a temporary thing which would soon change when she turns 18 in a few weeks. Having taught not to depend on anyone or form any deep connections/relationships, Ruby pushes everyone away. She refuses to socialize with anyone in the new neighborhood, so when boy next door Nate starts to mingle with her she just can’t keep him at bay. Even as hard as she tries to avoid him, she always ends up with him. So how will this friendship change Ruby’s life? How will she come out of her cocoon-like-shell to adapt to a new way of life?

My feelings for this book were very different at various pages.
In the beginning I did not like it. I had to read the first two chapters before I really caught hold of the story. Till the first two chapters I was completely lost. I would often find myself reading without understanding what was actually happening. I guess my mind was not really into the book.
After that it was okay even though still a slow read and a bit too dragging. I was not really fond of the main characters- Ruby and Nate, solely because of their mind-set. I wasn’t able to adjust to their perception of life and other things. But by the end of the book I could justify their behaviour and the atmoshphere of the book. I sympathize with Ruby and Nate for everything they had to put up with. Ruby is a very stubborn character and in the beginning she’s really unfriendly. She’s rude and  not very grateful. But the circumstances, under which she grew up were really terrible so I think it wasn’t entirely her fault for behaving that way. In a word I would call Ruby- Cynical. Nate, on the other hand, is the total opposite. He mingles with everyone in school and is not a quiet person. He’s very popular. I loved the way Jamie and Cora are portrayed. They are ideal sister and brother-in-law characters. Jamie is really sweet and generous. Not to mention REALLY rich. Cora is a lovely  sister- very protective of Ruby and not at all selfish.
I mostly love Sarah Dessen’s books for the quotes. They have some wonderful life related quotes and meaningful phrases that get us readers thinking (atleast it made me start thinking about things more often) I have gained a lot of insight from these quotes.
Overall it was a fine read, the reason being that the story was a little too deep for me. I’m not really into deep emotional books. Sarah Dessen has definitely written much better books. So if you like the plot/story line then maybe you should try it.

Did you read the book?? Liked it?? Don't forget to tell me your opinion.

TGIF---1---

While browsing through Dog-Eared & Bookmarked (blog) I came across this new weekly meme for the weekend and I loved the idea.It is hosted by Ginger@GReads.So here I am participating in this weekly meme. You can also participate if you want here.
TGIF is a weekly meme featuring a re-cap of this weeks posts and a question.

This week's question is-
Q)Book Tears:Do you get emotional when you read?Which books had you in tears?
Seldom do I get emotional when I read because I don't read much of sad stories. I used to find it ridiculous when people cried (either watching movies or reading books) but after having read a book, I realized that crying doesn't necessarily show weakness but it just shows that how well you've understood the book and its characters. It shows how well the book is written and how real the characters are portrayed if you must feel for the characters and get upset at their unfortunate times. The one and only book that has brought tears to my eyes is THE HOST by STEPHENIE MEYER. I understood the plight of Wanda in the end. The sincere act of humanity by Wanda was the worth the tears.Having never read such a deep story I was overwhelmed by Wanda's characteristics.

THIS WEEK AT BOOK HAVEN

Are you participating in TGIF??Hurry Up!!Its a great one.

Follow Friday---4---

Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Parajunkee. Its a great way to meet new bloggers in the blogging world and get to know about them.

This weeks question is-
Q)Do you judge a book by its cover?
Do I judge a book by its cover??That would be a yes and a no.Yes because, books with fascinating covers are my first choice and preference. No because, even if I don't like the book cover I do glance at the synopsis and so if I like it, I tend to pick up the book.Picking up a book (for me) has three stages-
1.The cover should catch my eye.
2.The name should be catchy.
3.If 1 and 2 are not true for the book, then the synopsis should be an interesting one.

What about you??Don't forget to leave your link if I'm not following you yet.Once again I want to thank all the followers for all the kind comments and for taking the time to stop by my blog often.

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading in which you share a little "teaser" from a random page of the book you are currently reading.Anyone can do it. But beware not to include spoilers or if you want to then please do mention it before-hand. This teaser is from the book Lock and Key by Sarah Dessen. Its definitely a good read. Go ahead and try it.
She left you, Cora had said and it was these three words, then and now, that I heard mostly clearly of all, slicing through the roaring in my head like someone speaking right into my ear.I didn't want this to make sense, for her to be right in any way.But even I couldn't deny the logic of  it.

Have you read it?? How'd you like it?

Review---Evermore by Alyson Noel

My 5th review. I am definitely liking this review business. Can't wait to read more and write more. Hope you like it and that you find this review useful.

Evermore by Alyson Noel emphasized the importance of a family. The book shows us how the absence of a family and the grief and sorrow of losing everyone in her family molds Ever’s life. Depending on her Ipod, Hoodie and Sunglasses, Ever puts a fullstop to her social life (dating, going shopping with friends, eating out). Enter- Miles and Haven, the only two best-friends Ever has got. Then comes the sexy, uncannily perfect in everything and mysterious guy who enrolls at her school. Lucky Ever for the new guy, Damen, is interested in her. Despite his good looks, there is something familiar about him that Ever can’t recall. Something about his weird behaviour, sudden disappearances that Ever can’t leave at the back of her mind.

I really really liked this book. As always, Alyson Noel hasn’t stopped amazing me with her books. The best part of her books are the character descriptions. I love the way she describes every important part of a character, including their beauty, behaviour e.t.c. I fell in love with Damen except for the part were he seems to disappear a lot of times (Yes I got really irritated about that). Haven is a little odd, a little weird but her behaviour is justified by Ever in the book. Miles is gay. He’s a good friend and knows Ever very well. This book has not 1 but 2 bitches- Drina and Stacia. Stacia is just the stuck-up bitch that every school has, jealous that Damen is more interested in Ever and not her. Drina is the real deal because every time she appears, Damen disappears and she seems to want more than revenge (from Ever) for being with Damen. Moving on to the most important character of the book without who the book wouldn’t be the great success it is- Ever. Ever leads a normal life. As normal as a psychic teenager’s life can get. She can read auras, see spirits, read other peoples’ mind. Talk about being burdened with all of this and that is the life Ever leads. If you like paranormal romance then go straight to the bookstore and get this book. I’m sure you will like it, if not love it.

What do you think about the book??Let me know.
